Spring Fling Cookie Camp!!!

Last weekend I went to Spring Fling, aka cookie camp.  I cannot express in words how much fun it was!  Not only did I get to meet lots of cookiers that I've been talking to online for over a year, but I got to meet and learn from cookie celebrities: Callye aka Sugarbelle, Glory from Glorious Treats, Ali from Ali Bee's Bake Shop, Pam from Cookie Crazie, Maryann aka the Cookie Artisan, and Karen from Karen's Cookies.  And of course it was the longest mommying-break that I've ever had.

The flight there was terrible!  Apparently over the last few years I've developed motion sickness that I never had before.  Every once in awhile I get carsick, but it's not too bad.  So I was shocked when I got so sick during our first flight.  Thank goodness it was just a short flight to Phoenix before heading to Louisville, KY.  So once we landed in Phoenix I headed straight for the magazine stall and got me some dramamine, which was a life-saver!  Then we were ready to takeoff, being taxied to the runway when there was a mechanical problem with the plane.  So they sent us back to the gate and decided that it wasn't safe to use that plane and we had to wait for another one.  Luckily we only had to wait a few hours for a new one (we could have been stalled till the next day!), but we finally landed in Louisville at 1:30 in the morning.  And of course they're 3 hours ahead of us in CA.  So we were pretty sleep deprived, but we had plenty of adrenaline from all the excitement.

Cookie Camp didn't start until later in the afternoon so we got visit the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs, which was much more interesting than I thought it would be.  I didn't bring my big old clunky camera the first two days, so most of these pictures are from my cookie friends Kris and Jackie.  Here's a picture of our group with our fascinators.  (Left to right: me, Christine, Jackie, and Kris.)

And here's Kris and I coming out of the gates.

Here's a picture of our instructors.  Left to right: Karen, Ali, Maryann, Glory, Pam, and Callye.

It was so much fun getting to meet them.  They were such nice people.  I have to admit I was kind of intimidated by them.  I really wanted to talk to Callye, but I didn't know what to say.  It's so weird how we stalk their blogs and know all about them but they don't know us.  Finally on the last day I got up the nerve to talk to her.  I just knew that when I got home my husband was going to ask me "Did you talk to Sugarbelle?" and I didn't want to tell him that I went all the way to Kentucky and then chickened out.  So I finally talked to her and she was so sweet!  Our little carpool group even got a picture with her. (Left to right: Kris, me, Callye!, Jackie, Christine, and Alyson of Corner House Cookies.)

It was a pretty expensive trip what with the cost of attending and the cost of the flights from CA to KY, but I'm so glad I did it!  Thanks, Matthew, for urging me to go.  I learned so much and got to meet so many great people.

And thanks so much to Kay and May of Cookie Two Shoes who spent so much time organizing this event.

Princesses, Knights, and Pirates

Last week I had two orders that were pretty similar, so I'm just going to put them in the same post.  Both orders were for birthday parties for 3 year olds.  One was for tiaras and knights shields, and the other was for tiaras and pirate ships (to keep the boys at the party happy).

I'm going to Spring Fling (cookie camp) this weekend, so I'm sure I'll ahve some fun pictures for you next week!

Giving Webinar Cookies

Last week I made some cookies for my former coworkers for a webinar they hosted.  Sorry to be boring, but there's not much else to say about these cookies.

Paris-Themed Teapot Cookies

My mother-in-law ordered some cookies to take to a birthday tea at a Paris-themed tea salon.  It was a bit of a last minute order and I didn't have much time to plan them out, so I just did the fleur de lis, Eiffel tower, and a little scrolly sort of design.

Cookies For My Little Cookie Monster

My little boy turns 3 today!  For his first couple of birthdays we went with a monkey theme (see here), but since I've started decorating cookies, I've found that my biggest fan is my son (although he doesn't care about how they're decorated, just how they taste).  We live in a small apartment, so when I have orders I usually just extend our dining room table so that the cookies can dry on one side of the table while we eat at the other end.  I usually try to hide them though because he will not stop whining until he gets a cookie.  He has actually skipped dinner before because we wouldn't give him a cookie.  So between his obsession with my cookies and his newfound love for Sesame Street, I decided to make him cookie monster cookies for his birthday.

I also used my large square plaque cutter to make a subway art cookie with all of the nicknames we've used for my son over the years.

Happy Birthday, Will!

Wedding Cookies

This last weekend my husband and I took a road trip to AZ to attend a wedding.  It was our first entire weekend alone without the kid, and it was wonderful!

I decided to make a few cookies for the bride and groom that match their invitation.  The invitation was on shimmery paper, so I added white pearl dust for some sparkle, although it's hard to see in the pictures.

Congratulations, Greg and Susanne!

St Patrick's Day Cookies

Today I get to show off my Christmas presents.  I had $50 of Christmas money burning a whole in my pocket and I couldn't decide what cookie related things to buy with it.  I had bought the LilaLoa cookie cutter a month or two ago, but it makes a BIG cookie, so I rarely use it.  I happened on Copper Gifts' website and found out that they now make the plaque cutters in smaller sizes, so I splurged and spent all of my present money on their site.  I also got the rectangle plaque and the teeny tiny square plaque.

I don't have any orders coming up so I finally had some time to play around a little bit.  I tried a new recipe for oatmeal rollout cookies and they were really good.  The dough was definitely harder to work with, so I'm not planning on replacing my sugar cookie, but I'll definitely be making them again.

I decided to use my new cutters to make some St Patrick's Day cookies since that's the closest holiday.  I wanted pretty cookies rather than stereotypical bright green clovers and pots of gold, so I ended up with these.  The celtic crosses were my husband's idea.  It was a rainy day yesterday so it's impossible to see the true colors, but I used moss green instead of leaf green.

Conversation Heart Minis

I just finished some mini conversation heart cookies for Valentine's Day. It's been quite awhile since I've had one of those candies, so I bought a pack of them as "research" so that I could get the colors right and so that I could have examples of the messages.  Those candy hearts are not what they used to be though.  There were some pretty creepy ones.  Aren't those candies supposed to be for kids?

Anyway, I decided to go with the old candy heart sayings that I remember from my childhood instead.
